Mahjong is an intellectual game for mobile and other platforms. Originating in China, it sets simple rules for four players who compete with each other. But despite the seeming simplicity, you need to calculate your moves to win cleverly.

Graphics 3.5/5

This Mahjong version is visually laconic. We have a 3D green playing table and a deck of the tiles. There are no jaw-dropping effects to make the game visually magical. But lack of the whistles and bells lets you fully concentrate on playing.

For some players, it maybe a major issue that this Mahjong edition isn’t translated. Chinese hieroglyphs are all you get, although rules of the game are universal here. So, if you’ve been acquainted with Mahjong before, playing its Mandarin version won’t be a challenge.

Gameplay 5/5

The classic Mahjong rules state the following:

  • Tiles. There are 136 tiles separated into Characters, Bamboos, Circles, Dragon, and Wind tiles.
Goal. To win, you must get Mahjong that consists of 14 tiles divided into four sets and one pair. You can also get a pung — three similar tiles or chow — three consecutive tiles in a row.
  • Rivals. Other players may claim a recently discarded tile, but only if they have a hand of 14 winning tiles. They can also have tiles that match a discarded tile and make a pung to win.

Even if you never played it before, Mahjong is intuitive to master. Simply watch how the AI plays and a few matches later you’ll understand every single move.

Mahjong is all about thinking strategically. It’s not a game of luck, but rather game of skill. As you play more and more, you’ll learn how to devise tactics, read your opponents’ intentions, and so forth.

Controls 5/5

Controlling Mahjong is limited to tapping certain tiles. Nothing challenging or complicated. Such simplicity brings a casual, serene vibe to the whole game, so you can relax and let your neurons do the rest.

Replay Value 5/5

Mahjong isn’t a one time passion. It’s a game that gets your brain hooked but its simple cleverness. If you enjoy giving your hemispheres a brief marathon, you’ll want another dosage of Mahjong again and again.

Mahjong is quite captivating. It’s a nice workout for your brain. It tickles your excitement bone as you need to be smart about your tactics to win. And of course, there’s that awesome authentic vibe of a very old Hong-Kong’s game that has a secret meaning behind its poetic imagery.
